The Real Cost of a Slow Website

Website speed isn't just a technical metric. It directly affects your Google rankings, conversion rate, and bottom line. Here's what a slow site is costing you.

Page speed sounds like a technical topic for developers to worry about. It isn't. It's a business problem with a very direct financial impact — and most business owners have no idea how much money their slow website is costing them.

The Numbers Are Brutal

Amazon calculated that every 100ms of load time cost them 1% in sales. That was years ago when internet speeds were slower and expectations were lower. The bar today is even higher.

Google found that a one-second delay in mobile page load time reduces conversion rates by 20%. A three-second delay? 53% of visitors abandon ship entirely.

Speed and SEO Are Inseparable

In 2021, Google made page experience a ranking factor via Core Web Vitals. Translation: slow sites rank lower on Google. That means less traffic, fewer eyeballs, fewer leads — regardless of how good your product or service is.

If your competitor's site is faster than yours, they have a direct ranking advantage. And ranking advantages compound over time.

What Causes a Slow Website?

  • Unoptimised images (the most common culprit by far)
  • Cheap, shared hosting with too many sites on one server
  • Bloated WordPress themes with dozens of unused features
  • Too many plugins, each loading their own scripts
  • No content delivery network (CDN)
  • Render-blocking JavaScript and CSS

How to Check Your Speed

Run your site through Google PageSpeed Insights (pagespeed.web.dev). You'll get a score out of 100 and a list of specific fixes. Aim for 80+ on mobile — that's where most of your traffic is coming from.

Also check GTmetrix and WebPageTest for additional context.

The Fix

Sometimes speed issues are fixable with relatively simple changes: compressing images, enabling caching, or switching hosting provider. Other times, the architecture of the site itself is the problem and the only real fix is a rebuild.
