When business owners want more traffic from Google, the question is always the same: should I do SEO or Google Ads? The honest answer is that they're not really competing — they're different tools for different jobs. But understanding the difference is crucial before you spend a penny.

What Is SEO?

SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is the process of improving your website so it ranks higher in Google's 'organic' (non-paid) results. When done well, it drives free, ongoing traffic to your site. The catch: it takes time. Typically 3–6 months before you see meaningful results, and longer to reach the top positions for competitive keywords.

SEO is right for you if:

  • You're in it for the long term
  • You want sustainable traffic that doesn't stop when you stop paying
  • Your product or service is something people actively search for
  • You have some time to wait for results

What Are Google Ads?

Google Ads (formerly AdWords) lets you pay to appear at the top of search results for specific keywords. You pay per click. Turn the budget off and the traffic stops — but turn it on and you can have leads coming in within hours.

Google Ads is right for you if:

  • You need leads quickly
  • You're launching a new business with no organic presence
  • You want to test new markets or offers without committing to long-term SEO
  • Your margins are high enough to absorb cost-per-click fees
  • You're promoting a time-sensitive offer

The Real Answer: Often Both

For most established businesses, the smartest approach is to run Google Ads for immediate traffic while building your SEO for long-term free traffic. As your SEO improves, you can reduce your Ads spend. You end up with a resilient, multi-channel strategy that isn't dependent on any single source.

The Website Underneath Both

Here's what most people miss: both SEO and Google Ads send traffic to your website. If that website doesn't convert visitors into leads, you're wasting your budget regardless of which channel you use. Your website is the foundation.
