Most business websites are beautiful digital brochures. They look the part, show off your services, and do absolutely nothing to win you new business.

If your site gets traffic but your inbox stays silent, you don't have a traffic problem. You have a conversion problem.

Here are five changes you can make right now.

Nail the 3-second test — website hero section clarity

1. Nail the 3-Second Test

The three-second rule is working against you in two ways — and most business owners only think about one of them.

Speed first. Google's own research puts it plainly: 53% of mobile users abandon a site that takes longer than 3 seconds to load. Every extra second costs you conversions. A slow site isn't just frustrating — it's actively sending visitors straight to your competitors.

Run yours through GTmetrix (free at gtmetrix.com). It gives you a full breakdown of exactly what's dragging your load time down. The usual suspects:

  • Hero videos on the homepage. Nobody watches them, and they're a load speed killer. Remove them.
  • Unoptimised images. Anything not in WebP or AVIF format is almost certainly oversized.
  • Too many scripts stacking up — analytics tags, cookie banners, live chat, Facebook Pixel. Every one adds load time.

Target sub-2 seconds on mobile. If you're scoring below 70 on Google PageSpeed Insights, fix it before you do anything else.

Then first impressions. Once they've loaded your page, you have less than a second before they decide whether to stay or go. When someone lands on your homepage, they should instantly know what you do, who it's for, and what to do next — without scrolling. If they have to hunt for that information, they won't bother.

Keep your hero section brutally simple:

  • A clear, bold headline that states your main benefit.
  • One sentence that clarifies who you help.
  • A CTA button above the fold — visible without scrolling.

Clarity beats cleverness every time.

Ditch the fake social proof — use real reviews and case studies

2. Ditch the Fake Social Proof

Buyers can smell lazy social proof from a mile away. A review from 'John D.' next to a stock photo of a smiling bloke in a hard hat? That kills trust instantly.

Real social proof looks like this:

  • Real names and real photos of your actual clients.
  • Live, embedded reviews from Google or Trustpilot — not screenshots.
  • Case studies with specific numbers and concrete outcomes, not vague praise.

If you don't have strong reviews yet, focus on showing your process and results until you do. Fake proof is worse than no proof.

Kill the 10-field contact form — reduce friction to get more leads

3. Kill the 10-Field Contact Form

Every extra field on your contact form costs you leads. If you're asking cold visitors for their phone number, budget, company size and project timeline before they've even spoken to you — you're actively killing your enquiries.

You don't need their life story to start a conversation:

  • Limit initial forms to the essentials: Name, Email, and Message.
  • Use a multi-step form if you need to qualify — one question at a time.
  • Save the detailed discovery questions for the call, not the landing page.

Lower the friction. Watch your form submissions rise.

Give away free value first — lead magnets and free resources

4. Give Away Something Valuable First

Most websites ask visitors to book a call or buy straight away. That's the digital equivalent of proposing on the first date.

Most visitors aren't ready to buy yet — they're just researching. If your only CTA is 'Book a Call', you're invisible to 95% of your traffic.

  • Create a free guide, checklist or template that solves a specific problem.
  • Offer a free tool, calculator or quick audit.
  • Collect their email, then nurture them with useful content over time.

When they're finally ready to buy, you'll be the only name they trust.

Write like a real human — ditch the corporate jargon

5. Write Like a Real Human

If your website is full of 'synergy', 'best-in-class solutions' and 'leading-edge paradigms', your visitors are falling asleep.

People buy from people — not faceless corporate robots. Write like you talk:

  • Read your copy out loud. If it sounds stiff or unnatural, rewrite it.
  • Use the word 'you' far more than 'we'.
  • Explain what you do the way you'd describe it to a friend at the pub.

Drop the jargon. Be real. That's what builds trust.
